Actually things went really well for OUTSIDE EDGE in the mid 1980’s. The British band had an international record deal with 10 Records/Virgin, their second effort “Running Hot” did good in Europe and they had the opportunity to tour with Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. In 1987 the band and producer Terry Brown (a. o. RUSH, GOWAN) recorded a never officially entitled third album that never got released due to problems with the record company. The band disbanded and its members joined different projects (B.C. SWEET, ELO – Part II, and others). In the year 2000 Per Winberg from Virgin Records Scandinavia picked up the idea to release both OUTSIDE EDGE albums. A great decision as songs like “Heaven Tonight”, “Never Too Late”, “Not Made Of Glass” or “Shooting From The Heart” are true AOR/Melodic Rock gems that the world needs to have heard! Compared with the polished “Running Hot”, the eight songs on “More Edge” sound a little rougher but still catchy as hell! Fans of FM and AVIATOR will love the album and should quickly add it to their wishlist! At the end I want to mention a bootleg entitled “Call Me” that gets traded as fourth OUTSIDE EDGE album. Actually that’s wrong as the songs on this bootleg are demos for another project the Farmer brothers started with guitarist Steve Turner (B.C. SWEET) and which never achieved a record deal!

While OUTSIDE EDGE’s self-titled debut was released in France only, the band finally got an international deal with 10 Records for the second album „Running Hot“. The label put a lot of money into the production of the band’s sophomore album and recommended them Terry Manning to produce the album, a man who already worked on albums for LED ZEPPELIN and ZZ TOP. Under his experienced guide the band recorded a longplayer very much in the style of other British and American bands of the 1980’s. So it’s no wonder that songs like the opener “Hearbeat Away”, the title track, the soulful “Wait”, the keyboard-driven “Louella”, the atmospheric “Don’t Be A Hero” or the AOR diamond “You” sound very similar to AIRRACE, SHY or VIRGINIA WOLF. Even some early BON JOVI shine through from time to time. If you like any of the aforementioned acts, then OUTSIDE EDGE’s “Running Hot” is an essential addition to your collection! MARCO SPÄTH |
